Microchip Technology has introduced the MXT2952TD 2.0 family of secure touchscreen controllers to assist EV charger designers in protecting their payment architectures. With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) and the need for expanded charging infrastructure, adding credit card payment options to EV chargers has become standard practice in many countries. The European Union has even made it a mandate, requiring EV chargers to meet Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards.

Traditional touch-enabled human machine interface (HMI) and radio frequency identification (RFID) combination-based payment systems are vulnerable to hacking attacks, such as malicious software updates or man-in-the-middle attacks during PIN entry on the touchscreen. Physical barriers and sensors are often used to protect these integrated circuits (ICs) from hacking, but they can be expensive and difficult to implement, especially when the RFID reader IC and touchscreen controller are on different printed circuit boards (PCBs). The MXT2952TD 2.0 family addresses these security concerns by encrypting touch data and cryptographically authenticating software updates, minimizing the risk of hacking and meeting PCI certification compliance standards. This solution provides EV charger manufacturers with an easily implemented and cost-effective way to remain compliant with security regulations without adding a second expensive touchscreen payment module.

The MXT2952TD 2.0 touch controller-based touchscreens are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, function accurately in the presence of moisture, and resist vandalism. They are effective when designed with IK10 standard 6 mm-thick glass, anti-reflective, anti-glare, and anti-fingerprint coatings, as well as IR filter/UV filter layers. The MXT2952TD 2.0 family utilizes Microchip's proprietary differential touch sensing technology, which offers exceptional noise immunity and superior touch performance even when used with thick gloves.

Aside from EV chargers, the MXT2952TD 2.0 family is suitable for various unattended outdoor payment terminals, including parking meters, bus ticketing meters, and other types of point-of-sale (POS) systems. The MXT2952TD 2.0 is optimized for 20" screen sizes, while its sister part, the MXT1664TD, is available for 15.6" screen sizes.

Microchip provides standard maXTouch family development tools, such as the maXTouch Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and maXTouch Analyzer, a production end-of-line test/inspection tool. Additionally, Microchip has a network of factory-trained global touch sensor module partners available to support custom touch sensor and touchscreen display designs.
